Welcome to the first post in *Todd Hoffman’s Thankful Thursday Thoughts*.
Each Thursday I’ll pause here to reflect on something I’m learning about living with a thankful heart — not because everything in life is going smoothly, but because God is still good, still present, and still at work even when our circumstances feel heavy or unclear.
I’ve noticed something in my own life and in the leaders I have the privilege of walking alongside: it’s relatively easy to feel thankful when the wins are obvious, the plans are unfolding nicely, and the path ahead looks clear. But real thankfulness — the kind that actually changes us — is forged when the situation is still unresolved, when the answer hasn’t come yet, or when the road is steeper than we expected.
One of the most freeing truths I keep returning to is this: **thankfulness is not a reaction to our circumstances; it is a decision about where we fix our eyes.**
When I choose to thank God for who He is — His faithfulness, His wisdom, His steady love — rather than waiting until my situation feels “thank-worthy,” something shifts inside me. The pressure to have everything figured out begins to loosen. I become a little more present with the people around me. I lead with a bit more patience and clarity. And I find I have more capacity to serve others well, even in seasons that feel demanding.
This doesn’t mean pretending difficulties don’t exist. It means refusing to let those difficulties have the final word over my heart.
Here’s a simple practice I’ve found helpful and that I invite you to try with me this week:
**Each morning, before the day rushes in, name three things you are thankful for about God Himself** — not about what He has done for you lately, but about who He is. His patience. His nearness. His ability to bring good out of what feels broken. His perfect timing. His heart for the weary.
It only takes a minute or two, but over time it retrains our minds to look for evidence of His character instead of scanning for what’s still missing.
I’m convinced that leaders who cultivate this kind of steady gratitude lead differently. They make decisions from a place of greater peace. They extend more grace to their teams. They stay faithful in the small things because they’re anchored in something bigger than today’s results.
So as we begin this journey together, I want to start right here:
**Even when the path feels uncertain, even when the timeline is longer than we hoped, even when the weight we’re carrying feels heavy — we can still choose thankfulness.**
I’m grateful you’re here. I’m grateful for the opportunity to share these reflections with you each week. And I’m especially grateful that we don’t have to manufacture thankfulness on our own — we simply get to receive it from the One who has already given us more than we could ever earn.
Would you join me this Thursday in choosing gratitude on purpose?
I’ll be back next week with another reflection. Until then, may you sense God’s nearness in both the clear moments and the cloudy ones.
With Thankful Heart,
